◆ 국문초록

이 연구의 목적은 남과 북에서 인정받는 예술가로서 최승희(1911~1969)를 통해 남북 문화 예술의 통합 가능성을 모색하는 것이다. 한반도 분단 이후 남북에서 인정받고, 현재까지 명맥을 유지하고 있는 예술가로는 최승희가 유일하다. 최승희의 무용이 당대는 물론이고, 현대까지 이어올 수 있었던 이유는 창작과 이론을 겸한 예술가이기 때문이다.

최승희는 이시이 바꾸를 통해 ‘신무용’을 접한 이후, 한민족 전통의 춤을 현대적으로 수용하여, 독창적인 무용을 창작하였고, 이를 통해 독립된 예술로서 신무용 개념을 정립한 인물이다. 최승희는 민족 무용에서 나아가 동양의 전통무용 형식과 가치를 접목한 창작 무용을 개발하였다. 최승희는 활동 범위를 한반도에 국한하지 않고, 일본, 중국, 소련, 미국, 유럽 공연을 통해, 세계적인 무용수로 이름을 날렸다. 최승희의 활동은 일제강점기라는 시대적인 상황과 월북이라는 정치적 논쟁 상황에서도 남북의 현대무용 뿌리가 되었다.

월북 이후 최승희는 발레 훈련 체계를 ‘조선 춤’에 접목하여, 『조선민족무용기본』체계를 완성하였다. 『조선민족무용기본』은 최승희가 30년 춤 경험을 바탕으로 기본 동작을 분류하고, 주요 작품의 기본 동작을 설명과 그림을 덧붙여 기록한 최초의 무용 훈련서이다. 최승희는 100여 편의 창작 무용 작품을 무대에 올린 예술가이면서, 『조선무용기본』 등의 무용 이론을 체계화함으로써, 체제를 넘어 남북에서 인정받는 예술가로 남을 수 있었다.

◆ Abstract

The purpose of this study is to explore the possibility of integration of inter-Korean culture through Choi Seung-hee (1911-1969) as an artist recognized in the South and the North. Choi Seung-hee is the only artist who has been recognized in the North and the South since the division of the Korean peninsula and has maintained its reputation to this day. The reason why Choi Seung-hee's dance was able to continue not only to the day but also to the present is that he is an artist who combines creation and theory.

Choi Seung-hee accepted the new dance and established the concept of dance as an independent art. He created a creative dance by modernizing the traditional Korean dance. Furthermore, it received the world's attention as a creative dance incorporating oriental values. Choi Seung-hee did not limit the scope of his activities to the Korean Peninsula, but made a name as a world-class dancer through performances in Japan, China, the Soviet Union, the United States, and Europe. Choi Seung-hee's activities became the root of modern dance in the North and South, even in the circumstances of the times of Japanese colonial era and the political debate of North Korea.

Choi Seung-hee completed the "Basic Korean National Dance" system by incorporating the ballet training system into Joseon dance. "Basic Korean National Dance" is a training book that classifies the basic movements of Joseon dance based on 30 years of dance experience and records the basic movements of major works in detail by adding explanations and pictures. Choi Seung-hee was an artist who put more than 100 creative dance works on stage and by systematizing dance theories such as "Basic Korean Dance", he was able to remain an artist recognized in the north and south beyond the system.
