□ Abstract

This paper rereads the memory of the 1937 deportation experienced by Koryŏin in Kazakhstan from the perspective of a traumatic memory. It aims to see how the memory of deportation has turned into a traumatic memory that is repeatedly summoned to the present rather than just remaining in the past. This paper sees the deportation as an incident that has driven Koryŏin out to the world of dehumanization where human vulnerabilities become revealed and forced them to live in constant innate fear afterwards. Since the collapse of the Soviet Union in the late 1980’s, however, Koryŏin, has never forgot their past history of deportation, but built their own collective memory and continued to mourn. I argue that through such process, we could call for universal human rights to be guaranteed for all ethnic groups in Kazakhstan by remembering the sad history of Koryŏin under the situation where Kazakh-centralism becomes more entrenched.
