□ 초록

 이 글의 목적은 ‘동아시아 전통문화’의 의미를 규정한 후, 동아시아 전통문화 해석을 위한 인식론과 방향을 살펴보는 데 있다.

 우선, 동아시아 전통문화를 규정함에 있어 두 가지 점에 주목할 필요가 있다. 특정 국가 내부에 존재하는 문화적 전통을 동아시아 전통문화를 대표하는 것으로 특권화하려는 유혹을 벗어나야 할 뿐만 아니라, 동아시아 전통문화를 잘 통합된 동일한 문화가 아니라 다양한 해석이 가능한 중층적이고 복합적인 문화로 간주해야 한다는 점이다.(2장)

 다음으로, 동아시아 전통문화 해석의 인식론적 방향은 오리엔탈리즘과 옥시덴탈리즘을 극복하고, 인류보편성을 지닌 사상적, 문화적 지평을 여는 데 있다. 오리엔탈리즘과 옥시덴탈리즘의 이원적 구도는 동아시아 지식인들에게 흔히 나타나는 동서문명에 대한 지적 기획이다. 그러나 동아시아 전통문화에서 보편적 가치를 추구함에 있어, 보편성이 특정 지역의 전유물이 아니라 서구와 비서구에 모두 개방되어 있으며, 고정불변의 가치가 아니라 역사적 상대성을 지닌 것이라는 인식이 필요하다.(3장)

 끝으로, 동아시아 전통문화에 대한 해석방향으로 강조한 것은 일국 중심의 배타적인 독점에서 벗어나야 한다는 점, 근대 이전의 전통을 의도적으로 계승하고 창조적으로 활용하려는 노력이 요구된다는 점, 전통과 근대가 조우하면서 형성된 동아시아 근대성의 역사 그 자체가 이미 한 세기에 걸쳐 또 하나의 전통을 이루고 있기 때문에 동아시아 전통문화론은 이를 포함할 필요가 있다는 점이다.(4장)

□ Abstract

 The purpose of this paper is to explain epistemology and its direction for interpretation of ‘East Asian traditional culture’, after defining its meaning.

 First, two points should be noted in defining the meaning of East Asian traditional culture. One point is to overcome the temptation to be privileged as representing cultural traditions within a particular country to East Asian traditional culture, the other point is regard it as layered and complex culture capable of various interpretations, not as the same culture well integrated.(Chapter 2)

 Secondly, epistemology for interpretation of East Asian traditional culture is oriented towards overcoming orientalism and occidentalism, moreover opening the ideological and cultural horizons with the universality. Dualistic vision of orientalism and occidentalism is intellectual planning for Eastern and Western civilization prevailing to East Asian intellectuals. But, in extracting the universality from East Asian traditional culture. What is required in recognizing the universality is not the monopoly of a particular region but is open to both Western and non-Western, besides does not have invariant fixed value but historical relativity.(Chapter 3)

 Finally, in this paper, three directions for interpretation of East Asian traditional culture are emphasized : escaping from the one state-oriented exclusive monopoly, efforts required for intentionally inheriting and creating the premodern tradition, as the history of East Asian modernity has been shaped by the encounter of tradition and modernity, its history itself has formed another tradition for over a century, it should be included in discourse of East Asian traditional culture.(Chapter 4)
