□ 초록

이 글은 2009년에 제작 방영된 예술영화 <백옥> 분석에 목적이 있다. 예술영화 <백옥>은 오진우의 생애 마지막을 배경으로 한 2부장 영화이다. 이 글에서 주목하는 것은 다음과 같다.

첫째, 영화 제목의 상징성이다. <백옥>은 인민무력부장이자 김정일의 후견인으로 알려진 오진우의 생애 마지막 시기를 배경으로 한 영화이다. 최고지도자에 대한 충성을 강조한 인물을 소재로 한 영화 제작은 새삼스러운 일이 아니다. 다만 영화 제목인 ‘백옥’은 영화 제작 이후 북한의 방송언론을 통해 ‘백옥같은 충정’이라는 새로운 상용구로 활용되고 있다. 북한의 방송 언론을 통해 충정의 표상으로 자림하고 있는 ‘백옥’의 원형이 바로 영화 <백옥>으로부터 출발하였다.

둘째, 김정일로부터 김정은 체제로 이어지는 세습 과정에서 등장한 예술영화 ‘백옥’이 의미하는 상징성 분석이다. 예술영화로 제작되었지만 영화 <백옥>은 기록영화의 특성을 보여준다. 후반부의 긴 엔딩 장면은 오진우의 영결식 장면을 그대로 활용하였다. 기록영화로 제작한 의도와 목적, 그리고 해석에서의 목적하는 정책적 의도이다. ‘백옥(白玉)’이 의미하는 것은 완전무결한 충정이다. ‘옥쇄(玉碎)’였다. 영화를 통해 오진우는 ‘죽음을 앞두고서도 두려워하지 않은 인물, 부서져 가루가 되어도 흰 빛을 잃지 않은 충정’으로 신화화(神話化) 되었다. 죽음에 대한 국가적 차원의 애도(哀悼)와 의미 부여를 통해 현실에서의 ‘오진우’ 이미지는 제거되고, 충정과 최고지도자를 향한 일심(一心)의 충정으로 재탄생하였다. 이후 백옥과 관련한 해석에서 철학으로서 ‘백옥철학’으로 확산하면서, 방송언론, 보도 자료 등을 통해 수령에 대한 충성의 관용어로 자리 잡았다. 국가 권력에 의해 이루어지는 애도-원호의 의례는 목적의식적으로 개입하는 또 하나의 정치행위를 영화 <백옥>을 통해 확인할 수 있다.

□ Abstract

<White Jade> is a North Korean film that portrays the late years of Oh Jin Woos’ life, known as the country’s Minister of Armed Forces. White Jade focuses on Oh Jin Woo’s absolute and sincere loyalty, which is represented by white color. The film’s title signifies the death of honor. Oh Jin Woo is described as a mythical figure who did not fear death and maintained his loyalty even under the most dire circumstances. After its release, White Jade has becoem more than a film and had a variety of functions. It became associated with the term “philosophy” as an ideological foundation for hereditary power transition. The film was followed by the rise of “White Jade Philosophy” as a philosophical guideline for the power succession process, and eventually became a term frequently used to symbolize loyalty in songs and press releases.

The mourning and relief rituals conducted by the state power is another form of purposeful political act. The art film White Jade is created against the background of the late years of Oh Jin Woo’s life. It is based on the life of an actual figure of political significance and utilizes specific historical materials. The significant portion of the films’ last part focuses on Oh Jin Woo’s funeral. It is more like a documentary film rather than an art film.

By emphasizing the state role in mourning and signifying, the image of Oh Jin Woo as an actual person in reality has been eliminated. His image has been re-created through the virtue of unwavering loyalty for the supreme leader. Such re-creation is akin to a myth. The art film White Jade represents a model piece of artistry which forms the process of molding a shared memory and sentiment symbolized by Oh Jin Wu during the power transition from Kim Jong Il to Kim Jong Un.
