□ 초록

이 논문의 목적은 북한이 사회주의 국가를 형성하고 유지하는 과정에서 정략적인 필요에 의해 ‘만든 전통’과 ‘전통적인 관습’인 일생의례-특히 혼례와 상례-의 어긋남 양상을 살피고, 지속되는 의례 절차를 발굴하여 그 지속의 의미를 밝히는 데 있다.

북한은 국가 건설 과정에서 민족전통을 호명하면서 새로운 국가 체제에 부합하는 ‘전통 만들기’를 수행한다. 주민들의 삶을 사회주의 생활문화로 변혁하기 위해 두 가지 방향을 제시한다. 하나는 새로운 전통 창조에서 ‘민족적 형식’에 ‘사회주의적 내용’을 담아내는 방식이었고, 다른 하나는 ‘복고주의적인 경향’과 ‘허무주의적 경향’의 경계였다.

일생의례에서 사회주의식 새로운 전통 만들기는 봉건적, 미신적인 허례허식 요소의 폐기와 민족 고유의 미풍양속 요소의 권장이었다. 북한은 국가 건설 초기에 관혼상제로 4분화된 일생의례를 혼례와 상례로 간소화하였다. 그러나 간소화된 의례의 절차 가운데서도 봉건적이고 미신적인 허례허식이라고 규정하여 강력하게 폐지를 권하는 요소들이 현재까지도 강한 전승력을 유지하는 사례가 있다.

혼례에서 큰상문화는 신랑 신부라는 새로운 가족 구성원에 대한 환영과 신랑 신부를 축하하기 위해 모인 이웃과 음식을 나누려는 인정의 발로로 지속되고 있다. 상례에서는 인정드리기와 면례 풍습이 강한 전승력을 보인다. 이 풍습들은 인정의 발로와 지역문화로서의 특성을 간직하고 있어서 지속성을 가진다.

현재 북한 사회도 외부적인 변화 요인에 따라 의례나 절차도 간소화되고 변화하고 있지만 인간의 도리, 인정을 지켜야 한다는 윤리 덕목으로 의례와 절차의 본연의 의미는 유지하고 있다. 통일의 과정 속에서 일생의례에 담긴 민족 고유의 전승 의미를 상호 소통으로 되살리는 방향이 진정한 생활문화의 통합을 꾀하는 길이 될 것이다.

 

□ Abstract

The purpose of this thesis is to examine the discrepancy between the 'traditions' and 'traditional customs', lifelong rites-especially weddings and funeral rites- in the process of forming a socialist state in North Korea. And we want to uncover the meaning of the ritual procedure that continues.

In the process of building the state, North Korea calls for ethnic traditions and carries out “tradition making” in line with the new state system. Two directions are proposed to transform the lives of the residents into a socialist lifestyle. One was the way that put the "socialist in content" in the "ethnic form" in creating a new tradition, the other one was the boundary of the “retrovertist tendencies” and “nihilistic tendencies”.

The creation of a new socialist tradition in the lifetime ritual was the abolition of feudal, superstitious, pretentious elements, and the recommendation of elements of national good customs.

In the early days of nation-building, North Korea has simplified the lifetime ritual into weddings and funeral. However, among the simplified ceremonial procedures, there are cases where elements that strongly recommend their abolition by defining them as feudal and superstitious pretentiousness and ceremonies maintain a strong tradition even today.

In the wedding ceremony, the Keunsang culture continues as a welcome to the new family members, the bride and groom, and the recognition of sharing food with neighbors gathered to celebrate the bride and groom. In funerals, the Injeongdeuligi and Myeonrye customs show a strong tradition of transmission. These customs have continuity because they retain a token of acknowledgment and the characteristics of local culture.

Even in North Korean society, the lifetime rituals are changing according to external factors, but the original meaning is maintained as an ethical virtue of protecting human morality and recognition. In the process of unification, the direction of reviving the traditional meaning of the nation in the lifetime rituals through mutual communication will be the way to achieve true integration of living culture.
