이 글의 연구 목적은 북한 주민들의 일상생활 속 속신의 양상을 파악하고 그 의미를 분석하여, 종교 활동을 통제받는 북한 주민들의 실질적인 믿음 체계를 파악하고, 북한 민속학 연구에 기여하는 데 있다.

연구 자료는 지역과 연령을 고려하여 선별한 탈북민 10명에게서 조사한, 속신으로 묶을 수 있는 구술 단문과 그에 얽힌 경험담이다. 속신이라는 용어는 북한에서 일상적 어휘가 아니지만, 주민들은 생활 속의 금기와 주술 행위를 당국이나 학자들이 단정하는 미신으로 보기보다는 민속풍습, 조상 숭배, 봉건적 행위 정도로 인식하고 믿는다.

북한의 속신은 상제례에 관련된 것과 혼인과 임신에 관련된 것, 질병 치료에 관련된 것, 여행에 관련된 것, 명절에 관련된 것, 일상생활의 규범으로 작용하는 것 등 삶의 전 영역에서 발생하고 영향력을 발휘하고 있다. 이 가운데 가장 강한 전승력과 믿음 체계를 갖춘 것은 장례와 조문, 제사에 관련된 속신이다. 북한이 사회주의 체제 속에서 유물론적 세계관을 강조하고 있지만 실제로 북한 주민들은 귀신이라는 존재를 인정하고 그에 대한 강한 공포를 드러낸 결과라고 볼 수 있다. 또한 제보자들이 탈북민이기 때문에 여행에 관련된 속신에 대해서도 강한 믿음을 드러냈다. 의료 체계가 잘 갖추어지지 않아서 질병 치료에 대한 속신도 비중 있게 인식되고 있다. 혼인이나 임신, 명절, 일상생활 속의 일반적인 속신은 상대적으로 약화되는 경향을 보인다. 흥밋거리 이야기 정도로 인식하는 사례도 있다.

북한에서는 강한 믿음 체계를 유지하는 속신들은 현실화되는 구조를 가지는데, 조문 속신의 경우는 사람의 도리를 지키기 위해 금기를 위반할 수밖에 없으므로 이에 대응하기 위한 속신들이 구체화되고 심화되는 구조를 보인다. 질병을 치료하기 위한 주술적인 속신에 저촉이 되었을 때는 이를 대처하는 속신을 새롭게 만들어내 현실적으로 대응하는 구조를 띤다. 그리고 일상적인 속신들은 일상생활의 규범으로, 현실에서의 금기로 자리매김하는 구조도 확인할 수 있다.

◆ Abstract

The purpose of this study is to understand the aspects of folk beliefs in the daily lives of North Korean residents and analyze their meaning, to understand the actual belief system of North Korean residents whose religious activities are controlled, and to contribute to the study of North Korean folklore.

The subjects of the study are oral short sentences that can be grouped into folk beliefs, and related story of experiences, surveyed from 10 North Korean defectors selected in consideration of region and age.

Although the term folk belief is not part of everyday vocabulary in North Korea, residents recognize and believe in taboos and magical practices in daily life as folk customs, ancestor worship, and feudal practices rather than as superstitions determined by authorities or scholars.

North Korea’s folk beliefs arise and exert influence in all areas of life, including those related to funeral rites, ancestral rites, marriage and pregnancy, treatment of diseases, travel, holidays, and norms of daily life. Among these, the ones with the strongest tradition and belief system are the folk beliefs related to funerals, condolences, and ancestral rites. Additionally, because the informants are North Korean defectors, they also show strong beliefs about folk beliefs related to travel. Because the medical system is not well-equipped, folk beliefs about disease treatment are also considered important. General folk beliefs in marriage, pregnancy, holidays, and daily life tend to be relatively weakened.

In North Korea, folk beliefs who maintain a strong belief system have a structure that is realized. Therefore, in the case of condolence folk beliefs, there is no choice but to violate taboos in order to protect people's morals, so the folk beliefs in response to this show a structure in which they are specified and deepened. When there is a conflict with the magical folk belief to treat a disease, a new folk belief is created to deal with it, showing a structure to respond realistically. In addition, we can also see the structure in which everyday folk beliefs are established as norms of everyday life and taboos in reality.
